Keeping the Order, Memory, and Resources of the Church

Keeping the Order, Memory, and Resources of the Church

The life of the church is not limited to the proclamation of the Word and corporate worship. When faith is incarnated in time and space, it also requires forms of organization that express the order, faithfulness, and transparency proper to the character of God. Good administration within the Christian community is an integral part of its spirituality, for it shows that the same seriousness devoted to the care of souls and to mission is also applied to the stewardship of everyday communal life.

From the very account of Creation, Scripture bears witness that the Lord is a God of order, not of confusion. Therefore, the Christian community is called to organize itself so that all things may be done clearly, decently, and for edification. The management of resources, the recording of memory, and the preservation of mutual trust are not secondary aspects but concrete expressions of life in the light. When the church organizes its finances with integrity, maintains faithful records of its journey, and establishes transparent processes, it reflects the very character of the Lord who called it.

Another essential value is faithful stewardship. The Word teaches that “it is required of stewards that they be found faithful” (1 Cor 4:2, ESV). Thus, the handling of the material goods of the community must be understood as a spiritual service, not as a mere administrative or bureaucratic function. Finances, when well managed, become instruments for the advancement of the mission; minutes and documents, when carefully written, become living testimonies of God’s grace in the history of the church. Transparency, in turn, safeguards trust and strengthens fellowship: to walk in the light also means to manage with clarity, so that all may see the integrity of the body of Christ.

This spiritual perspective on order and administration must wisely and lucidly take into account Brazilian legislation. The Civil Code of 2002 expressly recognizes religious organizations as legal entities under private law (art. 44, IV), granting them full freedom of creation, organization, and operation without state interference (§ 1). Unlike civil associations, churches are not required to adopt a single rigid model of assembly, board, or audit committee but possess autonomy to structure themselves according to their ecclesiological identity. Even so, the law affirms that a church’s registered bylaws confer legal personality, enabling it to manage property, enter into contracts, and represent itself in court.

The Federal Constitution, in turn, grants churches tax immunity (art. 150, VI, “b”), protecting their property, income, and services devoted to their essential purposes. This guarantee reinforces the responsibility to manage with faithfulness and reverence, for civil recognition comes with the expectation that the church will serve as an example of integrity and clarity.

Within our own community life, Igreja Batista da Graça in São José dos Campos, São Paulo, seeks to embody these spiritual and legal principles. Its board is composed of the president and vice president, who are pastors and members of the local presbytery. The president serves as moderator of the presbytery, legally represents the church, and presides over assemblies and Council meetings, where elders and deacons deliberate together. The vice president supports and substitutes the president in his duties.

The board also includes the first and second treasurers — deacons responsible for administering the church’s finances. They authorize payments, prepare the annual budget, present monthly financial statements to the Council, and submit the yearly balance sheet to the assembly at the close of the fiscal year. Joining them are the first and second secretaries, who record the minutes of assemblies and meetings, keep the membership roll updated, record attendance, and issue correspondence. These records are not merely legal acts but also the preservation of the church’s historical memory.

The Audit Council examines the treasury accounts before they are sent to the accountant, reviews the annual financial statement, and recommends its approval or not to the assembly. Far from being an instrument of suspicion, this council is a sign of communal care, seeking to ensure transparency and strengthen mutual trust. The board and audit council are further supported by an administrative secretary — an employee of the church — who ensures regularity in procedures and continuity in office operations.

Thus, when faithfully exercised, the administrative life of the church is also an act of worship to the glory of God. Every account rendered, every minute recorded, every report issued is a way of declaring that the Lord’s community desires to live with order, faithfulness, and clarity before God and before people.

Statement of Principles

Central Principle

The administration of the church is part of its spirituality and must be carried out with order, faithfulness, and transparency — as an expression of worship to God and service to the community.

Complementary Principles

▪ Administrative order reflects the character of the God of peace and aims at the edification of the body.
▪ The resources of the church are consecrated gifts to be managed as faithful stewardship.
▪ Transparency is an expression of life in the light and the foundation of communal trust.
▪ Written records preserve the memory of God’s action and must be handled with care.
▪ The audit council and the board are instruments of protection, clarity, and service — not of control.
▪ Tax immunity and organizational freedom, guaranteed by the Constitution and the Civil Code, are privileges to be exercised with seriousness and reverent fear of the Lord.

Prayer

Lord of the Church, God of order and faithfulness, we praise You, for all that we have and are comes from You. Teach us to care diligently for the life of the community, that every resource may be used responsibly, every record written truthfully, and every decision made with clarity. May the administration of the church be part of our worship and testimony, reflecting Your holiness before the world. Grant us upright leaders, faithful stewards, and devoted brothers and sisters, so that Your house may always be managed for the glory of Your name and for the advancement of the gospel of Christ Jesus, our Lord. Amen.

Summary of Class Taught by Pastor Gilson Santos
Church: Igreja Batista da Graça – São José dos Campos, São Paulo, Brazil
Date: September 14, 2025

This class, led by Pastor Gilson Santos, was part of the ongoing biblical and theological formation of the congregation of Igreja Batista da Graça. It emphasized that the administrative life of the church is not separate from its spirituality but an essential expression of it. The lesson developed the conviction that order, faithfulness, and transparency are reflections of the very character of God, who is a God of peace and not of confusion.

Participants were reminded that good administration — whether through financial stewardship, the recording of minutes, or the oversight of the Audit Council — is itself an act of worship, revealing the same reverence that guides preaching, prayer, and fellowship. The class also highlighted the biblical principle of stewardship, showing that every resource of the church must be managed as a sacred trust, and every record kept as part of the living memory of God’s work among His people.

Attention was also given to the legal and civic dimensions of church organization, noting that Brazilian law recognizes the autonomy of religious institutions and grants them tax immunity. These privileges, however, were presented as responsibilities before God, calling the church to model integrity, clarity, and accountability in all its dealings.

In conclusion, the class affirmed that faithful administration, exercised under the fear of the Lord, strengthens the unity of the body, safeguards mutual trust, and glorifies God through the practical order of His house.
